Tips for Managing Orthodontic Discomfort

Posted on 12/15/2023 by Weo Admin

Standard treatment options include braces, aligners, retainers, and night guards, among others. However, after undergoing this treatment, you may experience soreness or discomfort, especially in the first days of placement of the orthodontic appliances. Here are some tips for managing orthodontic pain:

Pain Medications and Oral Anesthetics

After an orthodontic treatment, such as placement of traditional metal braces, some mild pain and inflammation are expected. You can take over-the-counter pain medications such as paracetamol and ibuprofen. These medications help to minimize pain and inflammation. You can also use oral anesthetics in the form of ointment or gel to offer temporary relief for braces spots in your mouth. Ensure you use them sparingly or ask your orthodontist for guidance.

Cold Compress

If you have any form of inflammation or soreness, you can apply a cold compress to help minimize inflammation and pain in that area. A cold compress helps to constrict your blood vessels and also minimizes circulation in that area, which helps to reduce inflammation.

Saltwater Rinse

Swishing warm salty water in your mouth is helpful to soothe any irritation or oral sores that are caused by wires or braces. This water helps to accelerate the healing process after an orthodontic treatment. It also helps to reduce inflammation.

Orthodontic Wax

Orthodontic wax will adhere to your braces and safeguard your gums from irritation. The protection will prevent rubbing in the inside of the mouth and give you time to heal. This wax is malleable and soft, and you can apply it on the irritating edges of the traditional braces to prevent them from injuring your lips and cheeks.

Silicone Bands

You can place silicone bands over your traditional braces, wires, and brackets. These bands provide a perfect barrier between your cheeks and braces, which helps to minimize irritation.
