Orthodontic Care During Pregnancy

Posted on 12/1/2023 by Weo Admin

Adequate care also ensures the longevity of your orthodontic appliances. Some of the care tips you should adhere to include:

Brush Often

Brushing your teeth regularly is a crucial routine to ensure your orthodontic appliances last longer and are comfortable. Ensure that you brush your teeth for at least two minutes to ensure you reach all the surfaces of the teeth. For removable orthodontic appliances, you can remove them when brushing and clean them adequately.

Floss

Your orthodontist can also assist you in selecting the right type and floss and help determine a floss threader to ensure the process is simple. Ensure that you floss after every meal to remove all food particles stuck between your teeth adequately. Flossing regularly ensures foods and germs do not harm your gums and teeth. Floss carefully, as many pregnant women have sensitive gums.

Select the Right Foods

Nutritious foods are good when you are pregnant to ensure you have a healthy baby. Also, when you have braces, you need to eat the right foods to avoid damaging the appliances and to ensure you do not cause pain or discomfort in your mouth. You can stick to foods that are not hard to chew and those that do not stick to your braces.

Use a Mouthguard

Mouthguards are essential to protect your mouth when you are pregnant and prevent any damage to your orthodontic appliances. Your orthodontist can recommend a mouthguard to ensure you are comfortable. Ensure you clean and adequately care for the mouth guard to prevent oral infections.

Call Your Orthodontist in Case of Emergency

If you have an orthodontic emergency, such as loose wires, broken hooks, damaged braces, or severe pain, you must immediately contact your orthodontist. Any emergency can cause severe pain and discomfort, so it is best to take prompt action.
